New ITV Schedule Boosts Q1 Viewing Share

ITV has achieved its highest share of television viewing for two years (Q1 1997) during the first quarter of 1999, according to the latest Trends In Television report from the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA).

The new ITV evening schedule, which launched on Monday 8 March (see First ITV Evening News Gains 7.2m Viewers

Even better news for ITV is that it has taken viewers away from the BBC. BBC1’s Q1 share remained below 30% at 28.6%, a year on year fall of 1.9% points. ITV’s overall share was 33%, 0.8% points increase compared to Q1 1998.

The report also shows that growth in viewing to non-terrestrial television has slowed in the last few quarters. Cable and satellite penetration has slowed whilst people review the new digital TV options, says the IPA.
