New News Of The World Editor Given Murdoch’s Backing

Andy Coulson, who was yesterday appointed the new editor of the News Of The World, has received the seal of approval from News Corporation chairman Rupert Murdoch.
In a statement, the media mogul commented: “Andy has been crucial to the News Of The World’s success in the last three years and I am sure he is going to be great in the top job.”
Coulson, who was previously deputy editor of the paper, added: “I am delighted to have been given this amazing opportunity to lead one of the best teams in journalism.”
An email to staff from News International chairman Les Hinton revealed that Coulson would be taking the top job at the News Of The World (see Coulson Set To Succeed Wade At News Of The World). He replaces Rebekah Wade who took up the editorship of stablemate daily red top The Sun earlier this week (see Yelland Quits As Editor Of The Sun), a job she described as the “best in newspapers” (see New Sun Editor Says Job Is Best In Newspapers).
Coulson first joined News International in 1988 as showbusiness reporter on The Sun’s Bizarre desk. Later he was Bizarre editor, Sun assistant editor and Sun associate editor. In May 2000 he was appointed deputy editor of the News of the World.
