New Pay-TV Channel Plans For C4
Channel Four is considering plans to expand its pay-TV output with the launch of a general entertainment channel, to be available across digital terrestrial, cable and satellite television. Although in the early stages of research, and with no firm decision expected before Christmas, the news was broken this weekend at the Edinburgh Television Festival by C4 chief executive Michael Jackson.
Following the success of Film Four, the C4’s branded subscription channel, the new venture is expected to feature mostly UK programming and will probably be available in the cheaper basic tier of channel subscription.
Film Four, which launched in November last year (see Film Four On Air), has proved to be a successful venture for the company. The channel, which broadcasts contemporary, cult and independent films, is expected to have around 200,000 subscribers by the end of this year.
