Wilton Group Plc and Shaw Media Corporation of Hong Kong have announced that they are to establish a satellite channel for the Chinese communities in Europe, an estimated 850,000. Most of the programming for the Chinese Channel will be provided by Television Broadcasts Limited of Hong Kong. Chinese Channel will broadcast predominantly in Cantonese, but will include Mandarin and Vietnamese. CC will also broadcast up-to-date international and Asian news.
Wilson Group will take 80% of Chinese Channel, with Shaw Media Corporation owning the remaining 20%. CC will eventually broadcast for 12 hours per day on an Astra satellite from the Autumn of this year, with a limited service on Astra 1C from the beginning of March 1994. It will be subscription based.
