New Section Observer
Yesterday The Observer launched its three new sections.
The Sports section is now separate from the business section and in a tabloid format. There are detailed features on Nick Faldo, the Olympic Games in 2000, Will Carling, a preview of the Bruno/ Lewis fight as well as results of the weekend’s play. There are ads from Jack Daniels and Paul Mitchell with the only full page given over to classified ads.
There are now two magazines, the main magazine is more culture-oriented and the other, Life, has life-style features as well as cookery, gardening and TV highlights.
The Magazine has articles on the artist Graham Sutherland, the Conservative party faithful, the travel section discusses New York’s Bengalis and there is a feature written by Paul Theroux on fashion.
The articles are long and detailed, with uncluttered photographs. Ads include Silk Cut, Yves Saint Laurent, Murphy’s Irish Stout and Budget Rent A Car. 30% is given over to advertising.
Life, larger than the glossy A4 magazine, has features on the best night-club in Britain, laser surgery for short-sightedness as well as cookery, travel in New York and the Cayman Islands and fashion.
Ads include Jaeger, Audi and Threshers. 40% is given over to advertising, 50% of this is classified.
