Sky has launched a new box that turns traditional televisions into internet-connected smart TVs.

The NOW TV box, which costs £9.99, wirelessly connects TVs to the internet, giving users free access to apps such as BBC iPlayer, Demand 5 and Sky News, and channels including Sky Sports and Sky Movies.

Other online services such as Facebook and Spotify are also available.

The news comes as Google announces the launch of Chromecast – a dongle device that gives TVs access to web-based content.

The box launches as new research from NOW TV reveals the nation’s increasing desire to watch what they want, when they want – two thirds of Brits now use on-demand services on their main TV sets, and two in five stream programmes and films on a weekly basis.

“Millions of people are switching on to the convenience and flexibility of on demand TV, choosing when and how they want to watch,” said Gidon Katz, director of NOW TV, “and now there’s an easy and extremely affordable way to make every TV a ‘smart TV’.”
