New TV Sales Houses Announced

12.00: It has just been announced that Granada, Scottish, Grampian and Border Television have reached an agreement to set up a unique new sales force, responsible for all aspects of airtime sales and related commercial development for the 4 ITV channels. The new sales company will be headed by Mick Desmond, currently executive sales and marketing director at Granada.

As one, the four companies offer programme spending of over £100m for ITV’s schedule, with the potential to deliver to advertisers over 20% of UK households from one sales point. The sales force will sell all airtime from 1 January 1994, with negotiations for future business currently being discussed.

Deputy chief executive of Meridian Broadcasting, Malcolm Wall, also confirmed to MediaTel today that the broadcasting contractor is to merge its airtime sales with HTV, following six months of discussions. Wall hopes that the new company will begin operations in September but aims to take on sales completely in January. It will be based at Meridian’s headquarters in Leicester Square.
