News At Ten – Budget Cut?

According to yesterday’s Sunday Times, ITV is demanding cuts of between £10m and £20m per year in the budget for News at Ten and other networked news bulletins. The savings would go towards increasing comedy output, in a bid to appease advertiser criticisms. ITN would not comment this morning, but has announced that its lead over BBC’s 9 O’Clock News has continued to grow.

In the period from January – June 1995, News at Ten attracted an average nightly audience of 6.8 million people, beating BBC1’s Nine O’Clock News’ average audience of 5.7 million by 1.1 million viewers.

News at Ten increased its average nightly audience year on year by 100,000 viewers while the BBC’s audience fell by an equivalent amount (5.7 million viewers in 1995 vs 5.8 million viewers in 1994.)

News at Ten also increased its ABC1 adult audience by 1% year on year, while the ABC1 adult audience for the Nine O’Clock News fell by 2.5%.

Recent research carried out for ITN by consultancy/information services company Paradigm, showed that of 1,600 people asked to name their favourite news presenter, 25% chose Trevor McDonald; his nearest rivals were BBC’s Michael Buerk (4%) and Martyn Lewis (3%).
