News Corporation Expands In Latin America
Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation has taken a step further in its path to global media domination with the launch of a satellite television service to the fast-growing Latin American and Caribbean markets.
News Corporation together with its partners, Organizacoes Globo of Brazil, Grupo Televisa of Mexico and Telecommunications Inc of the USA hope to transmit 50 satellite channels to the region by next spring. News Corporation as well as owning 40% of BSkyB also owns Star Television in Asia.
… Tony Blair, Labour leader, last night quashed a call from Richard Caborn, shadow competition minister, for the MMC to probe BSkyB. Caborn had written a letter to Michael Heseltine alleging that BSkyB was abusing its market position by buying off potential rivals and forcing the cable companies out of the market. His main concern was that BSkyB is the main “gatekeeper” for access to the UK cable and satellite sector. Caborn has now withdrawn the letter.
