News Group Appoints New Marketing Director

Rupert Murdoch’s News Group Newspapers (NGN) has appointed former Barclays marketer Belinda Furneaux-Harris as its new marketing director.
The company, which publishes The Sun and News Of The World, has been without a senior marketer since Nick Canning left last year. He was temporarily replaced by promotions director, Andy Agar, who resigned in March to set up his own promotions agency.
Furneaux-Harris, who joins NGN on 1 September, left Barclays in 2001 without a job to go to and has been working as a marketing consultant ever since. Commenting on her appointment, NGN managing director, Camilla Rhodes, said: “Belinda is a welcome edition to our existing team. We are very excited by the prospect of taking our marketing activities to even greater levels of innovation.”
The appointment is expected to spark a range of promotional activity at The Sun and News Of The World, which are currently market leaders in the tabloid sector. However, it is likely that funds will be limited following the high profile price war with Trinity Mirror, which cost News International around £20 million in revenues.
The latest ABC data for the six months to June shows that the Sun saw its circulation increase by 2.5% year on year to more than 3.5 million, while News Of The World dipped by 2% during the same period to just below 3.9 million.
