News International May Revive Today Newspaper
According to reports circulating this week, News International, publisher of The News Of The World and The Times, is planning to revive its closed title Today. Rumours which begun last year that the publisher intends to launch a free daily title to rival The Evening Standard and Associated Newspapers’ planned giveaway title Metro (see Newsline), are mounting, and speculation suggests that the new launch is to be the revived Today title. News International refused to comment when contacted by Newsline.
News International closed Today back in 1995 after the title suffered high costs and rising losses (see Newsline). The daily’s final circulation figure was 576,437. The relaunched title is expected to be called London Today, and to be circulated amongst commuters. Associated Newspapers has agreed a deal to have Metro distributed via the London Underground.
