News International Plans Free Daily London Title

Reports are circulating today that News International, owned by Rupert Murdoch, is considering launching a free London afternoon /evening newspaper to rival The Evening Standard. The rumours come in the wake of Associated Newspaper’s announcement that it is to launch a free daily morning title for tube users (see Newsline).

News International would not comment when contacted by Newsline this morning, but it is likely that the group fears that the new Metro title to be launch by Associated may well effect sales of its own paid-for titles.

Former editor of The Daily Mirror, Richard Stott, is understood to be working on dummy issues of the new title.
