News International Profits Double
News International have announced unaudited results for the year ending 30 June 1995.
The company has reported an operating profit of £122.2 million for the period, an increase of 27% above the 1994 performance. According to News International both the circulation and advertising revenue showed increases in the year and overhead costs were tightly controlled. Unaudited pre-tax profit for 1995 was £778.7m. The same period in 1994 saw an audited profit of £360.9m; this is an increase of over 115%.
The share of profits from associated undertakings principally comprises the groups equity interest in BSkyB. Prior to the flotation of BSkyB in December 1994, the Group had a 50% share in the company. Since the flotation the Group’s interest has been 40%. Subscriber growth has shown an increase which has been reflected in operating profits. Total BSkyB paying subscribers grew from 3.48 million to 4.16 million over the year.
