Newspaper Awards – Daily Mail Wins Paper Of Year

The What the Papers Say Awards have this year named the Daily Mail newspaper as newspaper of the year, praised as a “technically brilliant product” which bucked the trend of falling tabloid sales.

The scoop of the year award went to Stuart Higgins, editor of the Sun for December’s revelation that the Queen had urged the Prince and Princess of Wales to seek a divorce, while the Guardian’s editor Alan Rusbridger was editor of the year.

The panel of judges were from Granada Television and the BBC. Virginia Bottomley also praised national newspapers for their efforts to ensure publication last Saturday despite the IRA bomb which damaged Canary Wharf.
