Newspaper Price War
The Daily Telegraph has from today entered a broadsheet circulation war, dropping its weekday price from 48p to 30p. The move, in direct retaliation to The Times’ price cut last September, comes as the Telegraph’s circulation dropped below 1 million. The Independent has reacted by cutting its price from 50p down to 20p for today only, and carrying a highly critical editorial on the front cover detailing the spoiling tactics of the other papers. The Guardian has no plans to alter its cover price, but is “monitoring developments closely”.
The new price war, as well as shaking up the broadsheet market, is expected to affect circulations of the mid-market Daily Mail and Express, who both have a cover price of 32p.
