Newspaper Rate Increases Special Report

The Daily Mail has this week revealed it is to increase its display rates from July 31. It is the first of the tabloids to raise its rates for several years.

The basic run of week SCC rate is increasing by 9.8% to £90 and the basic mono page rate is also increasing by 9.8% to £22680. It is the first increase for 5 years; the Daily Mail’s rates were last changed in 1988 although the ratecard was reprinted in 1990. Associated Newspapers has no plans to change the Mail on Sunday’s rates, which were last increased in September 1991. Express Newspapers has not increased its rates for several years despite issuing new ratecards for the Daily Express, Sunday Express and Daily Star last year. Rates for the Mirror Group Newspaper titles have remained static since December 1991 and News International has not increased the rates on its tabloids since January 1991.

Rate increases for the broadsheets have been more frequent. The Financial Times, Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph all had increases at the beginning of the year. The basic SCC rate for the Daily Telegraph rose by 4% and the Financial Times rose by 5%. The rate for the Sunday Telegraph rose by 3.7% to £56.

Newspaper Publishing has decided to hold its rates this year, with the last increase for the Independent and Independent on Sunday being in February 1992.

A new ratecard was issued for the Sunday Times in April to take account of the newspaper’s recent changes. The basic rates were not increased.
