Robin Burgess has been appointed as president of the Newspaper Society for 1996/97. He is chief executive of CN Group Ltd, publishers of newspapers in and around the Lake District. He takes over from Geoffrey Copeman, vice chairman of Eastern Counties Newspapers Group.
Mr Burgess previously chaired the Society’s editorial committee and is a member of its Council. Chris Oakley, group chief executive of Midland Independent Newspapers, succeeds him as senior vice president.
The Observer has appointed Ben Laurance as Business Editor. Mr Laurance will join the paper on May 7 from city stockbrokers Smith New Court where he is a retail analyst.
Additionally, Alex Brummer, Guardian Financial Editor, is assuming a role in addition to his Guardian responsibilities as Assistant Editor, Guardian and Observer Business News.
