Newspaper Society Examines Ownership Regulation

The Newspaper Society has commissioned research to examine the regulatory and commercial framework within which regional and local newspapers operate.

A working party has been set up, and NERA (National Economic Research Associates) have been appointed as consultants to produce a report on the economics of the regional press and to examine the commercial impact of both media ownership regulations and the special provisions of the Fair Trading Act 1973.

The report will focus on two key issues: the constraints imposed by existing media and cross-media ownership controls and the way in which UK competition law approaches the newspaper and media sector.

David Newall, the society’s director, commented:”The Society has been campaigning to change the current, outdated rules governing media ownership. In our view they do not serve the public interest and they discriminate against regional and local newspapers and their readers.”
