Newsquest Confirms Interest In Portsmouth & Sunderland
Newsquest, the regional publisher, has confirmed that it is in preliminary discussions with Portsmouth & Sunderland Newspapers, with a view to acquiring P&S’s newspaper assets, after speculation last week that the group intended to put in an offer for P&S (see Newsline). Newsquest is understood to be seeking the deal on a ‘friendly and agreed basis’.
Portsmouth & Sunderland is rival to Newsquest in the publishing sector. Newsquest ranks third in the Newspaper Society’s top regional publishers table, and P&S is ranked at 12.
Newsquest has submitted an application to the Department of Trade and Industry for a reference to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission in order that its interest is considered alongside that of other bidders.
