NME Teams Up With MTV To Launch Alternative Chart Show

IPC’s NME has teamed up with MTV to create a new alternative chart show, due to launch next month.
The daily NME Chart will be compiled by readers of the magazine and the channel’s viewers through an internet voting system. It will be presented by Zane Lowe and will feature breaking music news and exclusive premieres of videos.
The deal, due to be promoted to music fans disillusioned with the mainstream UK pop singles chart, will also see a weekly catch up programme broadcast on Sunday evenings and the chart published in NME each week.
Commenting on the launch, Niall McKinney, head of marketing at IPC Ignite!, said: “This is another great brand extension for NME and will allow us to talk to our readers on a daily basis. I am confident this will become the definitive alternative chart.”
Chris Sice, vice president of programming and development for MTV channels, added: “The NME chart show on MTV2 is a direct reflection of what music fans actually want to listen to. Teaming up with a renowned music magazine such as NME ensures that the chart is both credible and influential within the UK music scene.”
The deal follows a number of brand extensions for the influential music title, which recently secured cross promotional sponsorship deals with a range of the UK’s largest festival promoters (see NME Secures Festival Sponsorship Deal).
The latest ABC results for the six months to December 2002 show that NME has seen its circulation increase by 4.1% year on year to just over 73,000. The magazine’s strength has been attributed to backlash against the increasing proliferation of manufactured pop acts and the decline of dance music in the charts.
