The Radio Authority announced yesterday that it is to award the regional Independent Local Radio licence for the North East of England to Radio North East, based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, with a consortium including Border Television. The station, which plans speech programming combined with easy listening and country music fought off four rivals; Easy FM (Allied Radio), Heritage Radio, Sound FM and The Mix.
The licence covers Tyne & Wear and Teeside and is the third of five regional licences which will be awarded this year.
