Northern Ireland Cable Licence – Possible Bidder

Northern Ireland Cable Licence – Possible Bidder

Northern Ireland Electricity, yesterday announcing results, said it may join a cable television consortium to serve the Northern Ireland area. The regional electricity company is talking with potential partners. Bids have to be submitted by 23 January 1995; the franchise covers 570,000 homes.

Gordon Woodworth, finance director, said NIE would need partners with operational expertise in cable TV and telephony, but that the company could widen the geographical spread of the enterprise by delivering the necessary power on its overhead transmission system.

A licence to provide cable television was granted to Ulster Cablevision in 1983 but was revoked in 1991 for failure to build a system or provide services.
