NRS CHANGES SOCIAL GRADE PROFILE
As NRS is now basing the social grade of households on Chief Income Earners (CIE) instead of Head of Households/Chief Wage Earners(HoH/CWE) the social class profile of the survey has shifted up market.
The change is to stop the problems of husbands being given preference over wives, even if she is financially responsible.
The change was agreed in July 1992; it was predicted at the time that there would be an increase in the proportion of ABC1 households. The reason for this is that as the social grade of the CIE is now adopted, in many cases this puts the household in a higher social grade than would have been the case for the previous head of household.
