The Newspaper Society has called on the Government to adopt a six point plan for Europe’s newspaper industry during the UK’s presidency of the European Union which began at the beginning of this year. The Society outlines the following objectives:
Establishment of zero-rating newspaper cover prices throughout Europe (no VAT).
Vigorous promotion of freedom of expression and a press free from government control.
Dismantling of EU proposed advertising bans in Europe.
Recognition of newspapers as central to the development of European information industries.
Promotion of national regulatory regimes which enable newspapers to develop as integrated media businesses by the establishment of liberalised ownership rules.
Endorsement, as a model for Europe, of the UK media’s dynamic and innovative system of advertising and editorial self-regulation.
The Society goes on to say that the UK presidency must be used to ensure that European policy-makers understand the ‘vital role’ newspapers play in the democratic development of the European Union.
