NS Outlines Plan For UK Presidency Of EU

The Newspaper Society has called on the Government to adopt a six point plan for Europe’s newspaper industry during the UK’s presidency of the European Union which began at the beginning of this year. The Society outlines the following objectives:

  • Establishment of zero-rating newspaper cover prices throughout Europe (no VAT).
  • Vigorous promotion of freedom of expression and a press free from government control.
  • Dismantling of EU proposed advertising bans in Europe.
  • Recognition of newspapers as central to the development of European information industries.
  • Promotion of national regulatory regimes which enable newspapers to develop as integrated media businesses by the establishment of liberalised ownership rules.
  • Endorsement, as a model for Europe, of the UK media’s dynamic and innovative system of advertising and editorial self-regulation.

The Society goes on to say that the UK presidency must be used to ensure that European policy-makers understand the ‘vital role’ newspapers play in the democratic development of the European Union.
