NTL Announces One Million UK Broadband Homes

Broadband Britain came a step closer yesterday with the announcement that NTL has become the first internet service provider to have over one million UK homes connected to broadband.

The milestone achievement will give encouragement to BT and Telewest, which recently launched cut price broadband packages aimed at attracting the large numbers of dial-up customers normally put of by the high monthly cost of a high-speed connection (see BT Launches New Cut-Price Broadband Service).

NTL’s chief executive officer, Simon Duffy, said: “NTL continues to be the driving force behind the growth of broadband in the UK. We are proud to be the first internet service provider to have over one million homes connected to broadband and believe that the quality of our service sets the standard in the UK.”

Broadband take-up has risen significantly over the last year with increasing competition amongst internet service providers helping to drive down prices. The latest official figures show that number of UK households and small businesses with a high-speed internet connection has passed the key 3 million milestone (see UK Broadband Connections Pass Key 3 Million Mark).

A recent study from Continental Research shows that broadband penetration will continue to rise and almost 5 million UK households are expected to have a high-speed internet connection by the end of this year (see UK Broadband Connections Pass Key 3 Million Mark).
