NTL Buys Stake In Leicester City

NTL announced today the acquisition of a stake in Leicester City football club. The £12.5m deal will give the cable group its fourth media partnership with a Premier League club.

Under the terms of the agreement NTL’s subsidiary Premium TV will give the team an interest free loan of up to £11.5m, which will be converted into a 9.99% stake. In return the cable group will act as exclusive world-wide agent for media and commercial rights for the club which will include the operation of its net ventures and any TV channel associated with the club.

Geoffrey Hamilton-Friday, chief executive of Premium TV, said: “NTL and Leicester City will combine their strengths to get the best return for the club from sponsorship, advertising and media rights. This is also about harnessing all media opportunities including e-commerce and the internet, which is going to be an increasingly important medium in football.”

NTL signed a deal with Middlesborough earlier this year (see NTL Signs Deal With Middlesborough) and has similar deals with Aston Villa and Newcastle United.
