NTL Expands Digital TV Offering

NTL is expanding its digital TV offering with the launch of 25 new TV channels and 17 new radio channels.

The new services, which are intended to allow the cable company to compete with BSkyB in the multi-channel world, will be unveiled later this year and include a range of digital TV offerings from Discovery and Emap, as well as 5 commercial radio stations and 12 from the BBC.

As part of the move, the cable company is also planning to revamp its electronic programme guide (EPG) and following agreements with the BBC and Channel 4 subscribers will be able to access improved interactive World Cup and Big Brother programming via enhanced broadband TV services.

Stephen Carter, managing director of NTL, said: “Every aspect of our digital TV service is being improved. This is a shot in the arm for digital cable TV and more great news for our customers.”

NTL, which is believed to be close to refinancing to avoid liquidation (see NTL Is Close To Refinancing, Says Report), is the latest cable operator to revamp its digital TV offering in the wake of ITV Digital’s closure (see Administrators Confirm ITV Digital Sale). Last month Telewest launched an “enhanced” interactive TV service also offering subscribers improved interactive coverage of this summer’s World Cup and Channel 4’s Big Brother (see Telewest Launches Interactive TV Service).
