NTL Launches Digital Cable Services

NTL launched the rollout of its digital cable services yesterday, saying it hoped to attract 300,000 digital customers by the end of this year. Digital Plus is now available in NTL’s franchises in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. Customers will be offered digital TV and NTL internet and telephony services in the form of a package costing £13.00 per month. An interactive service including full internet access through television sets will also be launched from July.
The service will roll out during the second quarter of this year in the South East, Midlands, Teesside, Cambridge and Oxfordshire. The third quarter will see it made available to Andover, Swindon, Stafford/Coventry, Warwick, West Herts, Thames Valley and Northants, while Westminster and Milton Keynes will receive it by 2001.
The company also reaffirmed yesterday that it intends to go ahead with the acquisition of Cable and Wireless Communications. The deal was given clearance by the UK government in March this year (see Government Clears NTL/CWC Merger) but is still waiting for regulatory clearance regarding France Telecom’s proposed stake in the company.
