Cable firm ntl has announced details of its own-branded PVR designed to go head to head with BSkyB’s Sky+ system, featuring high definition capability and the ability to record three programmes simultaneously.
Other features on the device, which was unveiled over the weekend, include a 160GB hard drive, matching the highest capacity Sky+ box. The set-top box will also feature ethernet connectivity, allowing for a direct internet or home network connection.
The new product is also able to operate in a multi-room capacity, streaming recorded programmes to other boxes within the home.
The move follows a similar launch by Telewest earlier this year. Telewest’s equipment features a similar set of features and is clearly designed to counter the appeal of the Sky+ system.
Ntl is due to merge with Telewest over the coming months, setting the scene for a more closely fought battle for dominance in the multi-channel TV market.
Both companies have already hinted that they may bid for the rights to Premiership football matches, putting further pressure on Sky’s USP of football and film excellence (see Cable Giants Set To Make Premiership Bid).
Sky has made retaliatory moves of its own, however, snapping up internet service provider EasyNet earlier this month, a move which will enable broadband and video on demand services as part of Sky’s subscription packages in the future (see Sky Nets ISP For Triple Play Services).
