NTL Teams With Universal To Launch Movie Channel

NTL is to launch a new movie channel called The Studio in partnership with Universal Studios Networks. The channel will be available on all platforms and will be included in entry level packages for NTL customers.

The Studio is to go out 18 hours per day, seven days per week, showing contemporary movies screened in thematic blocks. Launching with a portfolio of over 1000 titles, it aims to target viewers across a wide demographic profile during relevant day parts.

The venture will be 50/50 between NTL and Universal. Steven Wagner, NTL group managing director of media and marketing said, “Universal is a natural partner for NTL and we hope that The Studio is just the start of that partnership.”

NTL recently signed a deal with BSkyB regarding channel supply (see BSkyB And NTL Strike Channel Supply Deal), yet the new channel could prove a rival for Sky’s own movie channels. Wagner denies this, however, saying, “The channel dovetails well with our recent BSkyB deal and leverages the popularity of movies to encourage many more consumers to watch highly desirable content.”

The new channel is expected to go on air within the next six months, but a launch date is yet to be revealed.
