Number Of Regional Titles Soars
The Newspaper Society has announced data for 1994 which shows that the total number of regional titles in 1994 was up 12.9% on 1993 to 1400. Total circulation was 49.3 million compared to 46.8 million in 1993.
The biggest growing sector was the weekly frees, up from 667 titles to 800. Weekly paid titles were up from 477 titles in 1993 to 500 titles; this is the highest number of weekly paids since 1988. Sunday titles were up to 11; this sector has been growing steadily since 1981 when there were just 5 titles.
Regional and local press is second only to television in terms of expenditure in the UK, with regional press taking 20.3% of total spend; television took 26.4%. National newspapers took 14.5%.
Total ad spend on regional press in 1994 was £1,871m; sales revenue was £697m on total turnover of £2,568m. Regional press employed 35,170 people in 1994.
