Observer Gets New Life
The Observer yesterday launched its revamped Life magazine, which is a merger with the previous Life and Observer magazine. The magazine remains the same size and style as the previous Life magazine – tabloid in full colour. The first issues come with a heavily promoted feature on censorship which is a separate pull-out A4 size 24 page glossy section.
The magazine does combine the lighter life style articles of the old Life with the longer in-depth serious articles of The Observer Magazine. The result is a lifestyle magazine with some heavier features; this week’s issue contained a focus on Gerard Depardieu, child criminals and the art collector Tom Alexander, as well as features on fashion, food & drink, gardens, travel, science and health. TV listings have been moved to the back of the Review section.
Life has 72 pages, 43% of which are given over to ads, in a 29:71 ratio of classified to display pages. Brand advertisers include Nescafe, French and Spanish Tourist Offices, Rover and Mentadent P.
