Oftel has ruled that the promotion between BT and BSkyB *(Oftel Investigates BT/BSkyB Link), which offers certain customers various discounts, is in breach of BT’s licence.
Don Cruickshank, director general of Oftel, indicated that the promotion discriminated against customers because the discounts were only given to subscribers of BSkyB. Cruickshank also said that as BT were paying for the free calls and promotions, the costs must be recovered from BSkyB.
The move is another blow to any links between BSkyB and BT. Yesterday Cable and Wireless announced a merger with Bell Cablemedia *(Cable Companies Merge) which may stiffen competition between satellite and cable as well as on BT’s dominance in the telecommunications market.
