Following wide speculation (subscribers see On Demand Plan Pay-Per-View Deal With Hollywood), the On Demand Management cable consortium is on the brink of sealing a pay-per-view movie deal with Hollywood film studio Warner Brothers. The On Demand group is representing Telewest, NTL, General Cable and Diamond Cable with Cable & Wireless Communications still teetering between joining the group or adopting a rival service which is to be launched by BSkyB.
If the deal is completed it will be a significant development for UK cable and will represent the first real challenge to BSkyB’s pay-TV monopoly as BSkyB will have to share movie rights with the cable companies.
It is reported that BSkyB are on the verge of signing a similar deal also with Warner and that On Demand are in negotiations with other Hollywood studios. Neither On Demand Management nor Telewest would comment.
