ONdigital Considering Bid For Premiership Rights

ONdigital is considering making a bid for the Premiership football rights, the terrestrial broadcaster confirmed today. The group, which is joint-owned by Carlton Communications and Granada, confirmed that it had held meetings with the Premier League board to discuss a planned bid.

Rights to the games become available at the end of the 2000/01 season and the Premier League has until the end of June this year to secure a new broadcasting deal. It is unknown at present whether the rights will be split or sold as a whole package.

ONdigital is seriously considering making a bid but has not confirmed whether it plans to bid alone or with ITV. It currently holds the rights to the Champions’ League tournament with ITV and could do a similar deal with the Network for the Premiership rights. A spokesperson said today that there were a variety of rights combinations available.

The group will be increasing its sports broadcasting this week with the launch of two new sports channels – ONsports1, which will show live action, and ONsports2, which will broadcast secondary matches.
