Online Shopping Strong In December

More than 10 million UK internet users visited online shopping sites during December 2001, an increase of nearly three million on December 2000, according to the latest research from NetValue.
The figures show that alomst three million purchases were made over the internet in December, with UK online retailers experiencing their “best Christmas to date.” The UK was found to have the highest percentage of people visiting online retailers in Europe, with almost 70% of UK users visiting e-commerce sites from home during December 2001, followed by 68% in France and 62% in Germany.
The report also shows that the average British woman spent longer on the internet during December last year than the average British man. According to NetValue, men continued to use the internet more regularly, with more separate sessions than women, but the average female spent five minutes longer online per session.
The figures from NetValue bolster recent research from LemonAd, which showed that December was a strong month for the online industry, with the number of online adverts increasing 8% month on month during December 2001 (see Online Ads Rise In December).
