Opposition Grows Over Channel 5 Bid

Opposition is now growing to the forthcoming Channel 5 bid deadline; C4 and Labour have made their opinion known this week and now three backbench Conservative MPs have launched an attack on the C5 bidding rules.

Amid growing speculation that the consortium including Murdoch’s BSkyB is emerging as favourite to win the licence, the MPs called on the ITC to give weight to the quality of programme plans when judging applications for the new channel, and to the “undesirability” of having Murdoch involved in the management or providing the news.

They also drew attention to the “desirability of maintaining diversity in the ownership of the British media.”

Channel 5 bids have to be in by Tuesday; the announcement of a winner will not be until late November.
