Users are not fully engaging with their new connected TVs and OTT* video services, according to research from Analysys Mason.
The number of pay-TV households in Europe is expected to increase by 12% to 185.2 million between 2011 and 2016, but Analysys Mason predicts that only 2.58 million households will be using an over the top video service as a primary service for their main TV set in 2016 – just 1.4% of pay-TV households.
However, the research firm forecasts that 14.6 million households will be using OTT as a secondary TV service, supplementing free-to-air content on a pay-per-use basis.
Viewers can now readily gain access to OTT services directly through their connected TV sets.

*OTT: Over-the-top content means online streaming of films. It also refers to delivering related content such as archival TV shows and other content, services, and applications in a video environment. OTT in particular refers to live video delivery through the internet. Consumers can access OTT content through internet-connected devices such as PCs, laptops, tablets, set top boxes, and gaming consoles such as the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
