Outdoor Advertising Saw 3% Revenue Fall In 2001

Total revenue for the Outdoor advertising industry fell 3% over 2001 to £676m, according to figures from the Advertising Association. However, industry body the Outdoor Advertising Association (OAA) is positive about the prospects for the coming year.

Revenue for 2000 reached a record £697m, but 2001 proved difficult for all media, and in Q4 in particular the Outdoor market saw revenue fall 13.9% year on year. Nevertheless the OAA points out that compared to sectors including TV, Press and Radio, Outdoor “performed impressively” in 2001. The feeling of the Outdoor Industry is apparently that Q4 2001 was the low point and that 2002 “is shaping up to be considerably better.”

Major outdoor name JCDecaux reported its full year results last week, revealing it had seen revenue growth of 8.9%, against the current tide of the revenue slump (see JCDecaux ‘Comfortably’ Ahead Of Outdoor Market). Jean-François Decaux, chairman and co-CEO said that the good news was in part due to the resilience of the street furniture market.
