Outdoor Industry Positive Despite Q3 Slide

The outdoor industry saw revenues drop by 2.8% in the third quarter of 2001 compared with the same period last year, but the Outdoor Advertising Association (OAA) says that sector is “holding up” against its strong performance in 2000 (see Outdoor Advertising Association Disputes Industry Decline).

The latest figures from the OAA show that while Q3 revenues are down compared with 2000 they are up 1% on the first half of this year, which according to the OAA’s chairman, Matthew Carrington, indicates that the sector could finish the year on a “positive note.”

Carrington said: “2000 was a record year for the outdoor industry and our performance must be seen in this context. The figures for Q3 are very positive and reflect the growing popularity of the sector, which due to increasing accountability is attracting more and more advertisers.”

He added: “We have no figures for Q4 and anyone making predictions would have to be very cautious in this difficult market. So far we have performed well and the sector has benefited form media spend moving away from other media such as TV and Radio (see
