BBC One’s late-night Wimbledon coverage secured the highest ratings by far with an impressive 11.8 million peak viewers.
The channel rescheduled all of its programming to BBC Two last night in order to show Murray’s five-set victory over Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka under the new Centre Court lights.
BBC One’s Wimbledon ratings increased steadily throughout the day, securing a 34.3% average audience share and reaching more than 9 million viewers by 9pm.
However, audience numbers peaked in the final fifteen minutes of the nail-biting match with a high of 11.8 million viewers, before ending at 10.40pm – Wimbledon’s latest ever finish.
Elsewhere, ITV1’s Real Crime drama documentary series, which focused on Sally Anne Bowman’s murder, pulled in 3.2 million peak viewers and a 12.3% average audience share during the 9pm to 10pm peak-hour.
Crimewatch came fairly close to its ITV1 rival during the all-important 9pm to 10pm slot with a high of 2.5 million viewers and a 9.2% average share, despite being moved to BBC Two to accommodate the tennis.
At the same time, Channel 4’s new Inside Nature’s Giants, the first episode in a four-part series looking into the ways photography is used to reveal the anatomical secrets of animals, attracted 1 million viewers and a 4.3% share.
Earlier on in the evening, ITV1’s Coronation Street managed to beat BBC One’s Eastenders in the battle of the soaps, with more than 7.1 million peak viewers compared to Eastenders‘ 5.8 million.
