Overnights: Final Torchwood attracts 5.8m viewers

John Barrowman In Torchwood BBC One’s five-part Torchwood – Children of the Earth sci-fi series secured the top spot on Friday evening with a high of 5.8 million viewers and a 26.7% average share.

However, the final part of the Doctor Who spin-off, which aired every evening last week, pulled in less than the first and penultimate episodes.

Thursday night’s Torchwood attracted an impressive 6.2 million peak viewers, while the first episode on Monday evening picked up over 6 million viewers (see NewsLine).

Nevertheless, BBC One’s Friday evening line-up banked the peak audience from 9pm onwards with BBC News and Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, which followed Torchwood.

BBC One also stole the show on Saturday with a peak run of Total Wipeout, the all-new National Lottery game show, Casualty and Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow.

ITV1 had more ratings success on Sunday evening with the last in the series of Stephen Fry’s Kingdom drama, which attracted almost 5 million peak viewers during the all-important 9pm to 10pm slot.

Overnight data is available each morning in mediatel.co.uk’s TV Database, with all BARB registered subscribers able to view reports for terrestrial networks and key multi-channel stations.
