Overnights: The Street banks the top spot with 5.3m viewers

The Street BBC One’s The Street secured the highest ratings during the all-important prime time slot last with 5.3 million peak viewers.

The second episode in the six-part series, which saw a single mother played by Anna Friel turn to prostitution to pay off her debts and provide for her two sons, attracted over 5 million average viewers and a 22.5% audience share between 9pm and 10pm.

At the same time, ITV1’s more light-hearted rival series Monday Monday, starring Fay Ripley and Holly Aird, pulled in a high of 3.9 million viewers and a 15% average audience share.

BBC Two’s The Supersizers Eat just pipped Five to claim third place in the peak hour ratings war with more than 2 million peak viewers and a respectable 8.3% share. Five’s The Hotel Inspector, meanwhile, picked up a high of 1.8 million viewers and a 7.6% average share.

Elsewhere, Channel 4’s Inside Nature’s Giants, which followed the evolutionary story of the giraffe, attracted just 1.4 million average viewers and a 6.4% share during the peak-hour.

Earlier on in the evening, the soaps battled it out for the highest overall ratings. ITV1’s Coronation Street managed banked the top spot once again with a high of 9.1 million viewers compared to BBC One’s Eastenders‘ 8.4 million.
