Ownership Plans Attacked

This week the European Publishers Council has published a paper claiming that the European Commission is to issue a draft directive on ownership which could exclude print media from the opportunities opening up due to technological advances and multimedia.

Frank Rogers, chairman of the Council, said the media industry needed deregulation to stimulate competition rather than fresh legislation to impose more restrictions on what companies could own. He warned that European companies could become dominated by large Japanese and American competitors.
