People Want Better Programmes, Not More Channels

A survey conducted by Cable & Wireless Communications as part of its £50m launch campaign, has revealed that 88% of respondents would rather have better quality programmes rather than more channels. Over 1.5 million surveys were sent to homes throughout the UK; 323,727 (22%) of these were returned. This is considered by C&W as an impressive response rate for surveys of this kind. The questionnaire was designed to discover what people want and expect from entertainment, information technology, cable TV and telecoms services in the future.

The survey also showed that 78% of respondents have 2 or more television sets. 40% have more than 3 TV sets. Just over half the respondents believed that cable and satellite television offered ‘interesting choices’. This was particularly the case with young singles (63%) and young families (64.5%). 57% of respondents said they never rent videos, but 86% would like to have video on-demand.

Participants in the survey would like the future to hold on-screen TV guides (78%), specialist interest channels (62%) and 76% would like online libraries for instant access to educational information.
