Plans For The Pictures

Plans For The Pictures

The National Heritage Secretary, Chris Smith has unveiled a seven point plan for the British Film Industry, these are:

1. For the first time ever, a Minister for Film has been appointed, Tom Clarke.

2. The film and television industry is to play a substantial role in the welfare-to-work programme and this means it must help to develop the skills and talents of those who want to work in the audio-visual industry.

3. The current financial and fiscal framework will be continually reviewed to ensure that it continues to encourage film-making and investment.

4. Everything will be done to increase the number of British films showing in British cinemas. Only 10% of Britain’s film going audience is watching home-made movies. It is intended to increase this to 20% over time

5. Broaden the audience and increase access to good cinema. This means attracting older generations back into the cinema.

6. Effectively promote the export of films and other audio-visual products.

7. Assist the work of the British Film Commission and the regional and local Commissions in attracting inward investment and film-making in their areas.

A top level working group is also to be created. Led by Polygram International president, Stewart Till it has been charged with turning the government’s aims into reality.

Mr Smith concluded: “Film-making in Britain is thriving. I want to see it continue to thrive and to grow. Success is fragile and needs to be nurtured, and government can and must play a part. I want to see ‘Made in Britain’ become the hallmark of film success around the world. The framework I am putting in place today for the development of film policy will help to do precisely that.”
