Pop Goes A New Title From BBC Magazines
![]()
BBC Magazines has announced plans to introduce a new magazine for young girls into the already crowded youth market.
The new magazine, popgirl, is set to launch at the beginning of April. It will cost £1.50 and consist of 32-pages of pop trivia, fashion and gossip for 6 to 10 year old girls.
Associate publisher, Jonathan Gifford, comments: “BBC Magazines has a terrific heritage in defining the pop magazine market and popgirl will extend our reach to include all ages from 6-16. We will be combining our expertise as the publisher of six pre-teen magazines with our unrivalled position in the pop magazine market to launch popgirl and take our readers closer to their favourite stars.”
The new title will be publicised in other BBC magazines, including pre-teen sister title Girl Talk and will also receive point of sale promotion. The first issue of the new magazine will have a covermounted gift.
Earlier last year BBC magazines launched Its Hot, which was aimed at the younger end of the teenage market, and reported an initial circulation of 104,015 for the six months ending December 2002. Emap has also attempted to entice a youthful audience to its magazines, and its heavily-promoted Sneak debuted at 86,535 after being positioned as younger sister of the hugely popular Heat (see Emap Teen Titles To Aid Sneak Launch).
