Possibility Of Alcopop Ad Ban

The government is considering banning the advertising of alcopops. This follows revelations in the press that the beverages are aimed at 16 and 17 year olds.

The Home Secretary, Jack Straw is concerned with the link between under-age drinking and teenage crime. He is determined to do everything in his power to reduce the number of young offenders and banning alcopop advertising is one of the measures being considered to help achieve this goal.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Portman Group, the alcohol industry’s regulator, said that there are already strict rules regulating alcopop advertising. The ASA has found that in 98% of cases these rules are observed. However, the Portman Group is prepared to make some concessions and is reviewing its own code on the advertising of alcopops.
