Power Increase For Digital TV Signal Planned

The government has proposed boosting the strength of the digital TV signal in order to improve quality and encourage adoption of the technology before the proposed analogue switch-off date of 2010. Culture secretary Chris Smith and Trade & Industry secretary Stephen Byers have this week written to senior controllers of the terrestrial broadcasters seeking their commitment to the proposal.

“I do not want to see the progress of digital television hamperered by a problem of poor coverage if it can be addressed,” said Smith. “I want to see digital television continue to forge ahead and good coverage and reception are a vital part of this.”

The power increase would occur at eight key transmitter sites: Sutton Coldfield, Mendip, Oxford, Bilsdale, Emley Moor, Black Hill, Crystal Palace and Winter Hill. The plans would double the capabilities of each transmitter. According to the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) plans could be implemented at most of the sites within the framework of existing international agreements. For the remaining sites, necessary modifications are being sought.

Smith concluded: “Digital television combined with a phone line can give everyone access to the internet from their living rooms. This plan is key step in avoiding a digital divide.”
