PPA Conference And MRG Evening

The PPA has announced that it will be organising a conference which addresses the opportunities for magazine publishers of new technology, especially the Internet. The theme of Magazines and New Media ’96 will be the idea that magazine publishers are beginning to see themselves as information providers not restricted by their traditional print medium.

The conference, sponsored by ICL and held at Canary Wharf on 4th June, will highlight the advantages and problems encountered in establishing WWW sites from a print background, with case studies of the IPC CD-ROM, Unzip, New Scientist Planet Scientist and Guardian On-line.

An international panel of speakers will include Michael Chamberlain, director of new media at United News & Media in the US, David Arculus, group managing director of EMAP, Robin Wood, electronic publishing development director of Miller Freeman and Mark Berner, publishing services marketing manager of ICL.

The first PPA New Media Awards, rewarding excellence in new media applications, will also be presented. Categories for the awards include on-line and off-line services for both the consumer and professional sectors as well as a special award for innovation.

The next MRG Evening Meeting will be held on Tuesday 25th June to discuss television research. It will feature two papers which were presented at the ARF/ESOMAR conference in San Francisco on Broadcast Research: Sue Read from Laser Sales will talk about the value of ITV peak time in “ITV is Not a Commodity Product” and Richard Windle and Liz Landy from RSL will discuss measuring audience reaction in the UK.
